Engine blew up at 47k miles....10 days before the powertrain warranty was expiring!!

So, odds dictate I should go to Las Vegas ASAP, hop onto roulette, and shove all my savings out there!

So long story short, car is a 2018 HotWheels 2SS, 6 speed, still running on it's ORIGINAL BATTERY FROM 2018, it was a CPO, taken well care of, all maintenance done on time. In fact, 10 days before the engine blew up, I just got the 45k mile service done at Chevy in Phoenix. Recently, I started noticing cranking issues on a warm start....I have actually suffered from this issue since I bought the car, whenever I took it to the dealership, they just checked the battery charge and said everything looks good.

The slow cranks did not happen every time on a warm start, they were rather rare....but whenever it happened, did take some peace away from my mind. As soon as I got the 45k mile service done, started noticing the slow crank every time on a warm start. One day, after I filled up gas, the car took a LONG time to start up, threw an error message in the display "Service stabili track", RPM meter was locked up and the car was driving rough. I go back to my hotel, sleep it off. I of course thought it needs a new battery now since the original one is almost 6 years old!! Next day in the morning, I fire it up, starts up just fine, drives fine too! I take it to a chevy dealership in SoCal, get the battery replaced, take off on the road, stop to get a coffee, and kaboom! The car won't start up at all despite a new battery.

I call the dealer, he asks me to call GM helpline and get a jump, I get a jump, car still does not start up. You smell electrical burning type of odor upon cranking it up. I eventually get it towed, it took them over 2 weeks before they concluded car needs a new engine. Code stored was for crankshaft position sensor. And guess what?!?! My powertrain warranty (the most useless warranty as per finance departments all over the globe) expired on 19th of August...while this happened on 9th August!!

They have already told me it will take a month to get the car back to me. A month + those 2 weeks for the diagnosis. I was just granted a loaner car today. More to follow...feel free to ask any questions!

With only 10 days left, your engine went out in style
Good luck with the repair, your HWE is a gorgeous special edition, and now you'll have a brand new LT1... sweet deal despite the inconvenience, if you ask me.

I had a 2015 silverado, it had a 5.3 and the lifter issue with so many of those engines, the problem started right as my 3 year warranty ended but i was under the 60k mile powertrain . I went to the dealership and talked to the service manager, explained to him that my grandfather worked for GM and it was the only brand new vehicle i ever bought. They talked to GM's dealership rep in the area and they fixed it, i paid 400 bucks out of pocket but they replaced the lifters and the cam and it was like a 4k fix. I don't know if that will happen to you but its worth talking to a dealership and talking to the area dealership rep and they may work with you.

Jesus, that's cutting it close. Glad you made it right in the nick of time. I have around 112k and change on my 2016 1SS, and since it's my daily driver through my credit union I got a bumper to bumper warranty out to 144k for around 1,500 after paying out the ass for GM's extended warranties in the past. It's U.S. Route 66 for anybody that's interested. Can only get it through a credit union, but they've already paid out more than I paid in with no hassles. Well worth it.

Great timing on yours going belly up. If my engine goes, hopefully it will bite the dust before I hit that 144k mark or I get to July of 2026. Fingers crossed.

Best of luck on this! Hate to see this happen to a Hot Wheels brother, but glad it was just within the powertrain warranty!

Ask if you can provide them a new oem starter. Shouldn’t get charged to have them install it on the new long block since they would be removing the old one and putting it on the new long block. After time multiple slow cranks/hot starts will cook the starter solenoid.

It is happening to cars without afm. Hope the lgx is not as bad. I am a 71 k miles no problem other than some oil in intake tube. I think it happens over 3k miles past oil change.I have been doing 5k or less changes with super tech. Two days ago I changed with Penn platinum with under 4 k miles. Will start doing that and see how it goes.

When I was reading through the OP's post, I assumed he was going to say that it was just a bad starter. Bad cranks, burning smell, etc. Can't believe the engine is actually toast?? Just doesn't seem right.

My only concern is....how will it hurt the resale? The fact that Carfax will be showing an engine replacement? I mean either way, if carfax didn't show it and I was making a private sale, I would disclose it nonetheless to the next owner. I know there are two sides of the coin in play here, lots of folks would be happy about purchasing a vehicle with a new motor (0 miles) installed recently...while some would just consider it to be an evil omen.

Everything is covered under the warranty! I don't have to pay anything!!
