This whole thread has me thinking about my move to this car from a 2SS. I don't think I'm going to do any modding aside from a catch can and air intake now. The ZL1 looks like a perfect fit for what I want in a second car. I personally think it will be at least $20-25k more than a 2SS, if not more. It needs to fit into GM's pricing hierarchy with the Z06 and CTS-V. I'm sure there will a lot of people who buy this car and can't afford it. That being said, I think hanging on to a gen6 SS for a couple of years should put you in a good spot to grab a lightly used ZL1. You're better off eating the depreciation on a less expensive asset and letting someone else eat it (and any potential dealer premium) on the pricier ZL1. We'll also no more about any potential issues if that pop up with this new 10 speed auto.

Here is my spin on my recent experience. I ran Tail of the Dragon this weekend in my 2016 SS A8 and I want another ZL1. The 2012 ZL1 that I traded for my 2016 SS was so much better for about all the things that matter on this drive. Maybe the M6 manual vs A8 auto is the difference, but I don't think so. My runs on this route (about 12) in the ZL1 were comfortable and progressively more confident. With the ZL1, I gained confidence and ran (or probably felt) faster and didn't doubt the car, just my ability. The 16 with A8 in 3rd gear (about optimal for the Dragon) was great for steady state, but traction was was not good, OK but just not confident. The 16 works very well at a lower level for driving. This may reflect my ability and comfort with the A8 but I couldn't get into a comfortable groove as quickly as the ZL1. I told my passenger shortly into the first turns that this wasn't the ZL1 and stop talking to me because I needed to pay attention. Hard to explain but once again I miss the ZL1. The 16 SS is an awesome car but not what I can drive as aggressively and fun as the 2012 Zl1. The 16 SS with the A8 is tight but not predictable. It's just different from the 2012 ZL1 and at a lower level of performance.

why not mod the car make it like the 1LE upgrade things and maybe you aren't used to manual?

The 2016 Camaro SS is leaps and bounds better than the 5th gen SS, but it pales in comparison to the ZL1 Camaro; however, you know the Camaro SS is a lot of bang for your buck when it will run right with a 2014 Z28 down the 1/4 mile. The Z28 was designed for superb handling though!

Where the new SS lacks and the gen 5 ZL1 is still better is tire patch, suspension, and therefore handling. The standard SS just does have as aggressive a suspension as the old ZL1, and it shouldn't. |

But I would argue that it "feels" slower on acceleration versus the ZL1 regardless of what the #'s say but that could just be me. |

I'm not sure that I belong in a thread like this. I have never tracked a car, but aspire to if I upgrade to a 2018 ZL1.
Having said that, my A8 seems to shift more aggressively since the transmission modular has been replaced. Some comments about the A8 have me wondering if not all are equal. Perhaps there is a tune of the modular that can be done.....? I was allowed to visit the mechanic at the dealership. I could walk back to his bay while my car was there. Perhaps I need to ask him about the more aggressive shifting |

I'd consider a different wheel and tire package which will help some of the cornering and putting down the power out of the corner. These cars only have a 275 on the rear, so a 305 with a sticker tire would help a lot.

I have read the reviews of the SS and really appreciate the performance this car has. I love the ZL-1 looks, not sure I need 640 HP. I don't care for the looks of the SS hood. So a ZL1 hood on a SS....

Love Tail of the Dragon, never got my SS there, but did in in my STI and Boss 302 in the past. Thanks again!
