My ZL1 doesn't have the nav feature either, so I just bought a GPS unit. The phone works pretty well for the most part, but we get ourselves off the beaten path a lot, so its nice to have the GPS, I can count on that more than cell phone service.

I wanted to bump this thread. The recent maps update for 2024 was just released and it does work with vehicles that were "unlocked" with the obdgenie. I got mine today and confirmed it works.
